Daylight Analysis

2022 | Buro Happold

I learned how to perform concept-level daylight analysis using Grasshopper/DIVA for a confidential US embassy project. In order to help determine if the project was on track to meet LEED criteria, I analyzed two key metrics: spatial daylight autonomy (SDA) and annual sunlight exposure (ASE). These two metrics together measure whether or not spaces receive enough daylight while avoiding glare. This study concluded that the given design was experiencing significant glare on the west, and would have challenges specifying glazing that could meet LEED criteria.
